Terms of use

For the RookTalk app, rooktalk.com, rooktalk.live and the Plus and Premium subscriptions. RookTalk is a product of secnetic GmbH, and Paddle is the seller of record for all orders. Last updated: 20 October 2026.

In short

  • secnetic GmbH provides the service. Paddle.com Market Limited is the Merchant of Record for all Plus and Premium orders.
  • You must be at least 16 to open an account and at least 18 to buy a paid plan.
  • Illegal content, harassment, spam, fraud and attacks on the service are forbidden. We restrict, suspend or close accounts that break the rules.
  • Subscriptions are monthly and you can cancel any time. The fee for a month that has started is not refunded. The 14-day statutory right of withdrawal for consumers in the EU remains unaffected.
  • Austrian law applies. If you are a consumer, the protective rules of the country you live in remain unaffected.

Who we are and what these terms cover

RookTalk is a product of secnetic GmbH (Seitenstettengasse 5/37, A-1010 Wien, Austria, company register no. FN 598979b, Commercial Court of Vienna). These terms apply to your use of the RookTalk Windows app, the websites rooktalk.com and rooktalk.live, the RookTalk servers and the Plus and Premium plans (together, the “service”). On this page “we” means secnetic GmbH and “you” means the person using the service.

Acceptance

By using the app, creating an account or joining a room as a guest, you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, do not use the service. When you buy a paid plan, Paddle's buyer terms also apply to the payment (see below).

Minimum age

You must be at least 16 to open a RookTalk account, and the same limit applies to using it as a guest. To buy Plus or Premium you must be at least 18, or the age of majority where you live if that is higher. We close the accounts of users we learn are under 16.

Your account

When you sign up, give accurate details and a working e-mail address of your own. Do not share your password with anyone. You are responsible for what happens in your account. If you think someone else is using it, change your password at once and write to hello@rooktalk.com. Each account belongs to one person; you may not sell, rent or transfer it. You can delete your account inside the app at any time. If you have a paid subscription, cancel it first.

The service

RookTalk is a voice chat service with voice rooms opened by invite code, room chat, file and screen sharing, private messages and a friends list. Besides the free plan there are the paid monthly plans Plus and Premium. Their current features and limits are listed in the plans section on the home page.

Voice, room chat, files and private messages are end-to-end encrypted on your device. What is encrypted and how long it is kept is set out in the privacy policy. Because the secret part of an invite code never reaches our server, we cannot recover a code you have lost. Room chat and files are deleted after 30 days, so save any file you want to keep on your own device.

Service level

We take care to run RookTalk reliably and securely, but we do not guarantee that the service will always work without interruption or errors. Maintenance, updates, faults, attacks or problems at internet and hosting providers can cause outages. We announce planned maintenance in advance where we can. We make no uptime commitment for the free plan.

The app updates itself automatically. For security or compatibility reasons we may stop old versions from connecting to the servers, so you need the current version to use the service. To improve the service we may change, add or remove features. Within a month you have paid for, we do not change your plan's features to your disadvantage unless security or the law requires it. If we are going to reduce what a paid plan includes for good, we tell you by e-mail at least 30 days in advance; if you do not want to continue with the new version, you can cancel before the change.

If a paid feature does not work because of us, your statutory warranty rights apply: we fix it, and if we cannot, we reduce or refund that month's fee. Details are in the refund and cancellation policy.

Acceptable use

You may use RookTalk only in line with the law and these terms. In particular, the following is forbidden:

  • Sharing illegal content or using the service for an illegal purpose, in particular child sexual abuse material and content that glorifies or calls for terrorism or violence.
  • Harassing or threatening others, hate speech, or spreading someone's personal information without their consent.
  • Recording or spreading conversations without the knowledge and consent of the people in the room.
  • Sharing files, sound effects, images or other content that infringe the copyright, trademarks or other rights of others.
  • Spam, fraud, phishing or spreading malware, or pretending to be another person, an organization or the RookTalk team.
  • Attacking the service, its servers or other users; overloading the systems, trying to get around security measures or rate limits, or trying to get into someone else's account or room without permission.
  • Creating accounts or rooms with bots or automated tools, trying to get around plan limits, or reverse engineering or modifying the app except where the law allows it.
  • Selling, renting or offering the service or paid plans to others for money without our written permission.

You are responsible for the content you share. Because content is end-to-end encrypted we cannot see it and do not check it in advance. If you see content or behavior that breaks these rules, report it to hello@rooktalk.com with the room code, a clear description and your reasons. We review reports based on the information and evidence they contain.

Misuse and bans

If you break these terms, depending on how serious the breach is we may warn you, remove content, restrict certain features, suspend your account for a time or permanently ban it. We may also stop a banned person from opening a new account. For serious breaches such as illegal content, attacks on the service or fraud, we may act at once without warning and, where needed, inform the authorities. Room owners and admins can also manage their own rooms with the tools their plan offers, and remove or ban participants from them.

When we take action, we send the decision and our reasons to the e-mail address on your account, unless the law prevents it. You can appeal the decision through hello@rooktalk.com; a person reviews your appeal and we tell you the outcome.

If your account is suspended or banned because you broke the rules, fees already paid are not refunded. When we close an account we cancel its subscription so that no further months are charged.

Intellectual property

The RookTalk app, the websites, the RookTalk name and logo, the design and the content belong to secnetic GmbH or its licensors. As long as you follow these terms, we give you a non-exclusive, non-transferable right to install and use RookTalk on your own devices, which ends when these terms end. Open source components in the app are covered by their own licenses. You may not use the RookTalk name or logo for your own product or service without our permission.

You keep the rights to the content you share (voice, messages, files, sound effects, profile photo, room names). You give us permission to use it only as far as needed to provide the service, that is to relay it, store it and show it to the people in the room or to your friends. This permission ends when the content is deleted under the retention periods in the privacy policy. We do not use your content for anything else, do not sell it and do not use it to train AI. You must hold the rights needed for the content you share.

Paid plans and payment

Our order process is conducted by our online reseller Paddle.com. Paddle.com Market Limited is the Merchant of Record for all our orders. The purchase contract is made between you and Paddle: Paddle takes the payment, issues the invoice, and Paddle's buyer terms apply to the payment. secnetic GmbH provides the service, and these terms apply to your use of it. For questions about payments, invoices and taxes you can reach Paddle at paddle.net.

Plus is $2 a month and Premium is $5 a month. The checkout page shows the final amount you pay, including any taxes. Subscriptions are monthly: the fee is charged in advance at the start of each subscription month, and the subscription renews automatically on the same day every month until you cancel it.

If you move from Plus to Premium, the difference for the remaining days of the paid month is charged at once. To move to a smaller plan, you cancel your current subscription; your plan runs until the end of the paid month, and then you can buy the new plan. If a renewal payment fails, Paddle retries it for a while and your plan stays active in the meantime. If the payment still fails, the plan ends.

Room benefits belong to the room owner, membership benefits to your account. When your plan ends, your account returns to the free plan and your persistent rooms become normal rooms.

Cancellation and refunds

You can cancel your subscription any time through the link in Paddle's payment e-mail, at paddle.net, or by writing to hello@rooktalk.com. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the month you have paid for; you keep your plan until then and are not charged for later months. Payments are not refunded once taken: the fee for a month that has started is not paid back, even if you cancel during that month. The 14-day statutory right of withdrawal after the first subscription payment for consumers in the EU, EEA, Switzerland and the UK remains unaffected. All rules, including billing errors and cases caused by us, are in the refund and cancellation policy.

Price changes

We may change the prices of the plans. For a new purchase, the price shown at checkout applies. If we want to raise the price of your existing subscription, we tell you by e-mail at least 30 days in advance and ask for your consent. If you do not consent, your subscription ends at the end of the last month you paid for and you are never charged the new price. If we lower the price, the new price applies automatically from your next renewal. The price of a month that has started never changes. If statutory tax rates change, the final amount at checkout may change accordingly.

Suspension and termination

You can stop using the service at any time and delete your account inside the app. You can cancel a paid subscription at any time as described above.

If you break these terms, we may suspend or close your account under the rules in the misuse and bans section. If we have to close your account without a breach on your part, for example because the law requires it, we refund the unused days of the month you paid for.

We may shut down the service or a plan entirely. We announce this at least 30 days in advance by e-mail and on this website, and we refund the unused days of the month you paid for. When your account is closed or deleted, your data is deleted under the retention periods in the privacy policy.

Liability

We are liable without limit for intent and gross negligence, for injury to life, body and health, and under mandatory product liability rules. For other damage caused by slight negligence we are not liable, as far as the law allows. Content shared by other users and their behavior are their own responsibility; we act on breaches reported to us under the rules above. Your statutory warranty rights are not affected by this section.

Privacy

We process your personal data as described in the privacy policy.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms when the service or the law changes. The current version is always on this page, dated at the top. We tell you about important changes by e-mail or in the app at least 30 days before they take effect. The rules for a month you have paid for do not change to your disadvantage during that month. If you do not accept the new terms, you can cancel your subscription and delete your account. For price increases the consent rule above applies.

Governing law and jurisdiction

These terms are governed by Austrian law, excluding the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG) and conflict of laws rules that would point to the law of another country. If you are a consumer, this choice of law does not take away the protection of the rules of the country you live in that cannot be excluded by contract; those rules continue to apply to you. If you are not a consumer, the competent court in Vienna has jurisdiction. Consumers may also bring claims in the courts of the country they live in, and we can bring claims against consumers only in the country they live in. If you live in Turkey, your right to apply to consumer arbitration committees and consumer courts remains unaffected. If any provision of these terms is invalid, the rest remain in force.
